DIEGO MENA INTERVIEW
Friday, March 2, 2012 at 07:55AM
Here's a little 'getting to know you' interview with one of Screenadelica's exhibiting artists' Diego Mena.
His amazing prints will be able to buy at the Screenadelica for Liverpool Sound City exhibition in May and you can view more of his work in the Artists section on this blog, or at www.didacus.co.uk
Where are you from and where are you now?
Madrid-London
How would you describe your style of work?
Apparently it's kind of abstract. People have told me that anyway. I'd say it varies but I'm definitely interested in patterns and I don't like making things too figurative. I'm going to try to incorporate more collages in the posters in the future, as this is another part of my work and I'd like to merge it with screen printing.
How did you start designing posters?
Well I was always involved with music, weather playing or organising gigs or working in the music industry, so it was only a matter of time before the design and screen printing creeped in. It's not just posters but also record covers and such. I have talked about it with a bunch of other poster artists and we came to the conclusion that it's our way of still being involved in music.
What's the nicest thing someone has said about your work?
Luke Drozd told me one of my posters was in someone's wedding list of presents. I thought that was pretty cool.

Take us through an average day designing for you.
Ride my bike to my studio, sit on my desk, get frustrated and eventually come up with something I'm happy with, I guess. I try to not have too many average days though, they're kinda boring.
What have you got lined up for the future?
I'm doing a poster for Group Inerane, a great band from Niger and a poster for the Oxes show in London, which is a bit of a dream come true. I'm collaborating with Heretic Printmakers for the Inerane poster. That should be fun. I'm doing a lot of freelance screen printing and hopefully I'll be pushing my printmaking practice to further limits.
